The Idiots’ Guide to PR!
What is Public Relations?
Public relations is about reputation - the result of what you do, what you
say and what others say about you. (CIPR Guide 2005)
Public relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the
aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and
behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain
goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics.
Why use PR?
Put simply, Public Relations is an essential part of Corporate Strategy in
today’s fast paced, highly competitive consumer society. A company that does
not communicate with the outside world I.e. its’ customers, its’ suppliers,
its’ business partners and competitors, has little hope of competing on a
level playing field with it’s’ competitors.
Modern organisations cannot afford to be complacent about making their
views, opinions, and products known to the world. Failure to do so
effectively can have potentially disastrous results.
As a management function, PR helps organisations in the following ways:
Anticipating, analysing and interpreting public opinion, attitudes and
issues that might impact, for good or ill, the operations and plans of the
organisation
Counselling management at all levels of the organisation with regard to
policy decisions, courses of action, and communication, taking into account
their public ramifications and the organisation’s social responsibilities
Researching, conducting and evaluating on a continuing basis programmes of
communication to help achieve the organisation’s goals. This can involve
goals as diverse as marketing and maximisation of sales, influencing or
promoting informed public understanding, (about the organisation, its’
products, services, or processes), employee, community, or government
relations, and a variety of other requirements
Planning and implementing an organisation’s efforts to influence or change
public policy or opinion
Maintaining your company’s brand and the public’s perception of that brand,
differentiating it from your competitors, and ensuring that it always
remains well-perceived, and at the forefront of your customers’ minds
PR is a cost effective and credible vehicle to communicate key business
messages to the press and target publics, and pound for pound, goes much
further than advertising
And most importantly, PR will assist you in more effectively selling your
product in a highly competitive marketplace!
That was the long version.. this is the short version!
In short, Public Relations should be viewed within your organisation as a
management function that assists you in understanding the attitudes and
values of your company’s target audiences (both inside the company and
outside it) and formulating strategic and communications plans that will
allow you to best communicate with them, and sell your product to them.
Through this planned communication, your organisation will be able to
maximise its’ potential and more effectively meet and exceed its’ strategic
goals.
