Impact Media “KO’s” Manchester with the World Cage Fighting Championships
17/7/06
Impact Media PR’s recent work ensured that the World Cage Fighting
Championships were a “knockout” in Manchester!
When the World Cage Fighting championships came to Manchester the events
organisers knew the controversial mixed martial arts tournament was going to
cause a stir. WCFC enlisted the help of Manchester agency Impact Media PR to
handle the regional and national PR campaign for the event. However, this
was a brief with a difference- not only was it up to the consultancy to
ensure that the messages about the event were carefully handled and that the
public were well informed about the true sporting nature of cage fighting,
but it also gave the company that rare chance to “kick up” some controversy
and fun in the city!
In an intensive one month campaign. IMPR pushed forward the key messages of
the sport and event by executing a campaign whereby the team ensured that
all sides of the sport were profiled in the press- both good and bad! This
encouraged debate about the controversial sport in the city and across the
country like never before, and created the perfect pre-event “buzz” around
Manchester for the tournament, which featured 20 fighters from around the
globe, fighting to prove that “no guts”, means “no glory”.
Impact Media MD Paul Patton commented “The WCFC was certainly a change from
our usual role as the city’s top property PR consultancy but it was a
challenge we rose to extremely well. The world cage fighting championships
certainly brings along with it a wide range of debate, and I think our team
managed the messages going to the media about the event extremely well.”
The event itself attracted over 7,000 people to the MEN arena to watch the
fighters battle it out to win the coveted championship title. Controversial
boxing champion Mike Tyson refereed the Manchester-Liverpool derby fight
which saw young Liverpudlian talent Terry Etim win.
